Today is the National Day of Prayer

Today the United States celebrates the National Day of Prayer, on which the people of the country are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation. Abraham Lincoln established the observance on March 30, 1863, during the depths of the Civil War. Lincoln believed that the citizens of the United States had developed a feeling of self-sufficiency that led them to forget God’s role in their lives. He felt that it was appropriate for the nation to take a day to acknowledge God’s presence in our lives and to “pray for clemency and forgiveness.” On this day, we invite you to join with us in celebrating God’s generosity and mercy and to pray for the strength to deal with the challenges facing our nation.
