Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has once again awarded Dr. Christian Birkedal the Physician of the Quarter award. This is the second time in a row that Dr. Birkedal has won the award. He also received the award last August 2013. The honor of Physician of the Quarter is based on patient and family recommendations, voting by hospital staff and high scores on evaluations done by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Services (HCAHPS). HCAHPS is the first nationally standardized survey of patient’s experiences while in the hospital that reports the findings to the public. Prior to the creation of HCAHPS there was no standardized, national survey that provided public reports that allowed for comparisons between hospitals nationally, regionally and locally. The survey is sent to adult patients randomly select at 48 hours to six weeks after they were discharged. It asks patients 18 core questions about their hospital experience including communication with doctors and nurses, hospital cleanliness, overall hospital rating and whether they would recommend the hospital.

As part of the staff of Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Birkedal has some high standards to live up to. The hospital itself is an award winner of The Joint Commission National Quality Approval; Consumer Reports gives them top ratings in safety and infection rates; HCAHPS consistently ranks them in the top 5% of all hospitals nationwide; The Governor’s Sterling Award; rated #1 by every patient questioned by the Department of Health and Human Services, plus they have rated them the area’s preferred hospital since 2010; 2012 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Consumer Reports and the Dayton Beach News-Journal recognized them with the 2013 Reader’s Choice Award for best hospital, best home health, best imaging and best rehabilitation facility. The hospital is a part of the Adventist Health System. This makes it part of the largest not-for-profit Protestant Healthcare System. The hospital operates three locations in Central Florida that include an outpatient clinic in Port Orange, a 199-bed hospital in Ormond Beach, and a 227-bed hospital in Daytona Beach.

About Dr. Birkedal

Dr. Christian Birkedal obtained a biochemistry Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Alabama Medical School located in Birmingham, Alabama and his residency and internship in surgery was completed at Baptist Health Systems in Birmingham. Dr. Birkedal is board certified in general surgery, as well as certified as a wound specialist. He is a member of the Society for Advancement of Wound Care, the AmericanCollege of Surgeons, and the American Association of Wound Care. In addition, he has contributed several chapters to the e-Medicine Textbook of Surgery and has contributed to many research projects. He is an award winning staff member at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, as well as a staff member at the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbolic Medicine. As a surgeon, Dr. Birkedal specializes in minimally invasive surgery, including single incision surgery. Single incision surgery is accomplished by entering the body through the belly button, basically creating no visible scaring. Other minimally invasive surgery requires only several small incisions that allow specialized instruments to enter the body and accomplish the needed procedure, leaving behind only small scars. Minimally invasive surgery avoids the need for a large incision that results in more pain, more recovery time, and damage to the nerves and muscles involved at the incision site.

Dr. Birkedal also conducts minimally invasive breast surgery that once required a mastectomy. He also performs minimally invasive hernia surgery, treatment of varicose veins and other vein diseases, as well as minimally invasive gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss and. He is certified in advanced wound care and performs operations for chronic wounds by performing muscle flap closure and skin grafts. Dr. Birkedal is certainly a favorite among his patients as they continue to provide positive feedback on the care they receive from him and his staff. He is a caring and knowledgeable physician.
