Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has once again awarded Dr. Christian Birkedal the Physician of the Quarter award. This is the second time in a row that Dr. Birkedal has won the award. He also received the award last August 2013. The honor of Physician of the Quarter is based on patient and family recommendations, voting by hospital staff and high scores on evaluations done by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Services (HCAHPS). HCAHPS is the first nationally standardized survey of patient’s experiences while in the hospital that reports the findings to the public. Prior to the creation of HCAHPS there was no standardized, national survey that provided public reports that allowed for comparisons between hospitals nationally, regionally and locally. The survey is sent to adult patients randomly select at 48 hours to six weeks after they were discharged. It asks patients 18 core questions about their hospital experience including communication with doctors and nurses, hospital cleanliness, overall hospital rating and whether they would recommend the hospital.
As part of the staff of Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Birkedal has some high standards to live up to. The hospital itself is an award winner of The Joint Commission National Quality Approval; Consumer Reports gives them top ratings in safety and infection rates; HCAHPS consistently ranks them in the top 5% of all hospitals nationwide; The Governor’s Sterling Award; rated #1 by every patient questioned by the Department of Health and Human Services, plus they have rated them the area’s preferred hospital since 2010; 2012 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Consumer Reports and the Dayton Beach News-Journal recognized them with the 2013 Reader’s Choice Award for best hospital, best home health, best imaging and best rehabilitation facility. The hospital is a part of the Adventist Health System. This makes it part of the largest not-for-profit Protestant Healthcare System. The hospital operates three locations in Central Florida that include an outpatient clinic in Port Orange, a 199-bed hospital in Ormond Beach, and a 227-bed hospital in Daytona Beach.
