Obamacare: How the Obamacare and Its New Taxes Trample upon Americans’ Liberty
Recent reports have noted how The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) also known as Obamacare will penalize workers who don’t have health insurance through a federal tax penalty.[ii] Axiom Administrative Services believes the new federal health care law, through its increased taxes upon businesses and individuals and its individual mandate, is trampling upon the freedom and rights of American citizens to choose their own health and keep more of their hard earned money. Axiom Administrative Services would like to get your opinion on how the new health care law will impact your health care options, ability to earn a living and make your own health care decisions.
Along with opponents of President Obama’s new health care, its supporters have no problem pointing out its flaws.[iii] According to David Gamage, a self-described Obamacare supporter and staff writer for the Wall Street Journal, feels Obamacare has bad provisions in it. He believes, as the law currently stands, will create unneeded costs for the average working American.[iv] He believes the law dis-incentivizes workers from taking higher paying full-time jobs because the law removes tax-payer subsidies by doing so, “Consider a low-income American supporting a family of four deciding whether to take a part-time job that pays $36,000 a year or a full-time job that pays $42,000 a year. According to my research, accepting the higher-paying job could result in the family losing over $10,000 a year in health-care subsidies.”[v] David Gamage’s quote and research shows many groups get hurt by the new health care law. First, the family of four does not have much incentive to work harder to make $6,000 more a year when they would lose a subsidy of $10,000 per year. Taxpayers lose out because they have to pay for the family’s $10,000 subsidy.[vi] Businesses also lose out because as more workers become part-time versus full time, they lose their stable labor pools provided by full-time jobs with benefits. Additionally, hiring managers report that overseeing a part-time staff incurs more costs and unseen problems which reduce a businesses’ efficiency.[vii]
According to the Heritage Foundation, a Washington D.C. think tank, Obamacare is going to implement over 18 brand new taxes while removing hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicare. Based on the following chart:

Specifically, the Heritage foundation sees 2013 as a notable year because this legislation cuts a large amount of funding from Medicare and raises taxes by quite a bit in 2013 alone, “Not only did the President and his partners in Congress take $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for Obamacare, but they also raise taxes by $836.3 billion to pay for it, with $36.3 billion hitting Americans in 2013 alone.”[viii]
There are other taxes that are and will impact employers and employees when Obamacare is further implemented. Regarding health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible savings accounts (FSAs), this legislation severely reduces the number and type of medical products that can be purchased with funds from these accounts. For persons with HSAs who buy prohibited items with funds from these accounts will now incur a 20 percent fine on the purchase. After 2013, people with FSAs will only be able to deposit up to $2,500 per year, much less than previously allowed.[ix] In order for health expenses to be deducted, expenses must be 10 percent of one’s adjusted gross income compared to 7.5 percent of one’s adjusted gross income before this legislation passed.[x] This threshold to deduct medical expenses has increased by one-third; therefore, this will undoubtedly impact millions of people and impact the take home pay of millions of people.
Perhaps the most disheartening and lasting effects of Obamacare is that it is in direct contradiction to President Obama’s promise not to raise taxes on families making less than $250,000 per year.[xi] Experts predict Obamacare is going to cost Americans jobs and future wage increases. According to the Heritage Foundation, health care “plans valued in excess of $10,200 for individuals and $27,500 for families”[xii] will have to pay a new 40 percent excise tax for such coverage. Through indirect taxes such as increased costs for medical devices, prescription and non-prescriptions medications because companies are simply going to pass on the costs from Obamacare to consumers, Obamacare is squeezing consumers from virtually every angle. Coupled with taxes on tanning services and similar services, the new federal healthcare is encircling American businesses and consumers leaving them with fewer and fewer options because prices will rise from direct government policies.[xiii]
As you can see from this analysis on Obamacare, once Obamacare is fully implemented, businesses, workers and consumers will be deluged with numerous taxes. While businesses can and often do pass on taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices and employers to their employees by not hiring or giving pay increases, consumers will only put up with so many tax and price increases. Consumers, who also employees for the majority of the time, will suffer the most because they are left powerless by the lack of availability of jobs, increased prices for healthcare and taxes. Obamacare: Supposedly Increasing Insurance Coverage at the Expense of Workers’ Hours?
The 2012 September Jobs’ report lowered the unemployment rate to 7.8% after 114,000 full-time and 582,000 part-time jobs were created last month. This rate moved 0.3% lower from its 8.1% unemployment rate calculated from the August 2012 Jobs’ report solely because of part time jobs, not healthy grow of full-time jobs. [i] However, many people, including Jeffrey H. Anderson from the weekly Standard, believe that Obamacare’s employer mandated health care coverage, including its new definition of “full-time” for workers, is in large part to blame for the large number of newly created part-time jobs.[ii]
Delving more in-depth into the new mandate of Obamacare, one must look into the new definition of “full-time” created by the Obama administration’s recently passed legislation, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), to see why there are more part time jobs being created. Jeffrey H. Anderson of the weekly Standard points out that under Obamacare, employees working 30 hours or more per week are now classified as “full-time.” Since full-time employees, working for employers that have 50 or more employees, must have healthcare through the Obamacare mandate, employers who decide not to provide coverage or pay the fine, will create more part-time jobs in the future to get around this mandate.[iii] Therefore, one can directly blame Obamacare for more and more part time jobs being created with even fewer hours compared to a full-time being defined as either 35 hours per week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics or the traditional 40-hour work week.[iv][v]
Since Obamacare is creating a new class of part-time workers, it is fundamentally interfering with the relationship between employer and employee. It disrupts how businesses run their organizations and how workers interact within the labor market. Ed Morrissey, a writer at the website Hotair.com, points out how government intervention can be very costly to the market, “This is the problem with massive government interventions into markets. They create perverse incentives, and force participants in markets to look for alternatives to the massive costs of those interventions.”[vi] What Ed Morrissey means by this quote is that Obamacare has forced unnecessary stress upon the markets.
He goes on to discuss how Obamacare’s intentional or unintentional creation of a class of part-time workers is detrimental to both workers and businesses alike, “Businesses usually prefer stable labor pools, and full-time status and reasonable benefits usually help provide that kind of stability. As a hiring manager for years, I can tell you from personal experience that managing a part-time staff creates its own costs and headaches, much of which won’t be felt in the home office of a multiple-location entity like Darden.”[vii] He further discusses, “However, the costs may not outweigh the savings any longer derived from dumping benefits for workers — and that’s doubly true in a bad job market for workers.”[viii]
Based on this information, Obamacare’s 30-hour work week full-time status and the resulting class of growing part time workers show this structural change in the unemployment figures is directly and almost exclusively attributable to Obamacare’s contents. There is more disheartening news because according to Mike Shedlock, there are 8,613,000 people who are currently in part-time jobs but want to have full-time positions. This figure does not include the 582,000 new part-time jobs created in September of 2012.[ix] Based on these figures alone, and as Obamacare is going to be fully implemented fully on January 1, 2014, one could extrapolate that there we be more part-time workers and less full-time workers as time goes on.[x]
Based on the evidence presented here, it seems that Obamacare is not welcomed by many workers and many businesses and owners. Looking at the evidence presented here, you will see that the new full-time work week of 30-hours and the related health insurance mandate for full-time workers will make more and more companies contemplate whether they want to follow the law or shift their workforce more and more to a part-time staff. Based on everything discussed, Obamacare can certainly share some of the blame for the structural shift in the economy from full-time workers to part-time workers.
Now that we have covered the real and lasting effects of Obamacare, we would like to ask you the same question again. Integrated Medicine: The Importance of Nutrition and Overall Health
According to WebMD, integrative medicine can be summed up as a “whole-person approach — designed to treat the person, not just the disease.”[i] In fact, while there might be some nonconventional medical therapies used within the integrative medicine approach, the main tenant of integrative health is to implement therapies, both conventional and alternative, to heal the mind, body and spirit. Simply defined integrative medicine takes Western medicine and complements it with natural and alternative treatments including herbal medicine, yoga, stress reduction strategies, massage and acupuncture. Miami Integrative Medicine works with every patient, every day to deliver the most complementary medicine. [i]
Integrative medicine improves overall health because it focuses on a comprehensive approach to health from head to toe. When a health problem is discovered, rather than looking at it from a completely medical perspective, it considers all factors that may have contributed to the condition. Factors include how the mind-body connection can directly influence the performance of the body’s immune system.[i] Taking a comprehensive look at one’s emotional, spiritual and physical health, with an emphasis on the relationship between patient and practitioner, integrative medicine looks for all causes and all cures.
Nutrition is a cornerstone of integrative medicine and thus should be followed to promote optimal health. As part of a maintaining one’s spiritual and mental health, nutrition is another way to complement one’s integrative medicine treatment. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, eating a diet based on integrative medicine principles can both prevent and treat cancer. Eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, in as many colors as possible, are some concrete recommendations to prevent and treat cancer. Cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli have a natural chemotherapy type compound. Berries are loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients. Generally speaking, Dr. Weil believes that along with the fruits, vegetables and berries, eating nuts, whole grains, and cold-water fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids is the best way to complement an approach to integrative medicine.[ii]
Dr. Andrew Weil, consistent with the integrative medicine approach, believes nutrition can only go so far. Hence, there is a need for the complementary approach found with integrative medicine. He believes that a lot of physicians do not spend enough time with their patients going over prevention methods and how to live a healthier life. Since the traditional-only medical community focuses on the causation and fix formula, integrative medicine can provide a hybrid traditional and holistic approach to staying well. Therefore along with eating a wide variety of minimally processed organic foods[iii] and the need for physicians to spend more time educating their patients, found in integrative medicine, Dr. Weil believes following the integrative medicine formula is a good start.[ii]
Proper nutrition can be accomplished by eating foods, but also by nourishing the mind and spirit. Those suffering from serious diseases, including cancer, along with their traditional forms of treatment, receive treatment for the mind, body and soul. As WebMD puts it, “As she puts it, the service is designed to ‘deal with everything but the tumor.’ That means helping patients with stress, pain, and anxiety, as well as providing them with ways to manage symptoms and increase their sense of well-being.”[iv] The services the patient receives include message, acupuncture, music, nutrition, supplement counseling, meditation, self-hypnosis and much more. The patient became intrigued by it and noticed her pain, stress and anxiety were markedly reduced because her treatment focused on her cancer and her entire body, mind and soul. Now, tying everything together, one can see that integrative medicine takes a comprehensive survey of sicknesses and treats them with not just on approach, but a multi-prong approach.

What to Look for When You are Looking for a Surgeon
Surgery is a major life event and it is literally a life and death event. Therefore, when you need surgery, you need to make sure that you get the best surgeon available. However, selecting a surgeon is not as simple as picking one out of the phonebook or from an online search. You will learn what to look for when you are looking for a surgeon for yourself or your loved one. There are some simple, but not well-known, attributes to look for when selecting your surgeon.
The first thing to look for when searching for a surgeon is to make sure your surgeon is qualified. In order to make sure your surgeon is competent and qualified, the American College of Surgeons recommends that you look for the three following attributes: your surgeon is board certified, has ambulatory or hospital accreditation and is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Surgeons.[i]
It is essential to understand the criteria so you can locate a qualified surgeon. Being board certified entails earning a medical degree, either an OD (Doctor of Osteopathy) or a MD (Medical Doctorate), passing a residency, of three to eight years and passing a written and/or oral examination. After a medical doctor becomes board certified, the certification is valid between six to ten years and must be renewed by attending continuing education classes. Such board certification can be verified independently online.i Facility accreditation, through ambulatory or hospital accreditation, simply means a hospital, surgery or specialty treatment center is focused on providing its patients top-notch health care and has proven it can meet these commitments. If you see “FACS” after the surgeon’s name, you will see that your surgeon is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Having the “FACS” after their name means that the surgeon has voluntarily submitted to and passed standards according to the American College of Surgeons. The criteria to be ACS certified include ethical conduct, training, education, professional qualifications and surgical competence.i For more information, please visit the American College of Surgeons’ website here.
Along with education and certifications, other things to look for when searching for a surgeon is a surgeon’s experience level and their surgical track record. By simply asking your surgeon, you can determine how experienced he or she is. Questions should include how many surgeries have been performed, how many complications and how many secondary surgeries related to the initial one. Another way to determine your surgeon’s level of experience, to verify and get an independent source, and any complications from surgery and even any complaints or sanctions against the surgeon is to check websites from government and independent monitoring agencies.ii
Along with having the knowledge, skill and scientific know-how to be a surgeon, there are other necessary attributes to look for in a surgeon. Your surgeon must be open to change.iii Your surgeon must keep on learning medical and surgical advancements as well as being technically adept. For example, Dr. Thomas R. Russell, who is the executive director of the American College of Surgeons, explains why your surgeon should be open to change, “We have changed in my lifetime from surgery being done in a very invasive way — you had to open people up — and we used to say that great surgeons made big incisions. We have moved in my lifetime from very invasive surgery to what is now becoming minimally invasive.”iii Additionally, Dr. Russell points out that you should look out for a doctor who has good people skills, communicates well and is compassionate towards your individual surgery. Essentially, your surgeon should welcome your questions no matter how difficult they may be – this shows your surgeon understands your concerns and shows empathy towards them.iii

Two years after the Affordable Care Act passed the U. S. Congress political commentators see it as one of the country’s most divisive laws in decades.[1] As then Illinois senator Barrack Obama announced his declaration to become the Democrat’s presidential nominee, universal health care has been the topic of discussion all across America.
Dr. Farid Naffah, a physician from Warren, Ohio has penned an advertised piece entitled, “The Risks and Perils of Obamacare.” His piece, endorsed by 43 like-minded physicians, has brought up some serious issues with The Patient Protection and Affordable HealthCare Act. Dr. Naffah has taken the lead to question this law and brings up some serious issues and questions about it, just before President Obama might be elected to a second term. Based on his article, Axiom Administrative Services would like to see where you, as a physician, stand on this legislation.
Dr. Naffah believes this new health care law will discourage and prevent current doctors from running their own private practice. With new regulations and decreased rates of re-imbursement from the government for medical services, private practices are being squeezed financially. Doctor’s offices are “raided” on a regular frequency. Billing systems are regularly audited to obtain payments the government alleges physicians wrongfully billed. Claims of impropriety are often prematurely judged and labeled fraud. Cases of fraud incur massive government fines, which are determined by auditors that receive a financial cut of the total fine levied against physicians’’ private practices.[2]
The article also blames future doctor shortages on Obamacare’s financial disincentives in becoming a doctor. While nearly all people who become doctors do not do it primarily for the financial rewards, most people do expect to be compensated for years of education and residencies. Since physicians are less able to maintain their own practices, and Obamacare will prohibit physicians from owning hospitals, doctors will have their salaries severely limited. When this healthcare legislation is fully implemented, doctors will be lucky to make $150,000 per year; this will be the top of the salary range. Salary ranges for doctors, who on average, have $200,000 or more in education debt, along with the opportunity to pursue career such as lawyers or business owners with a much lower chance of getting sued, will plummet future enrollment figures at medical schools. Dr. Naffah cites some startling statistics about the effects of the healthcare that will impact everyone now and into the future. 90% of all doctors are dissuading their children from becoming physicians. With Obamacare there will be 160,000 fewer doctors by 2025. Even though President Obama claims everyone will have health insurance, 20% of people won’t be able to get care because there won’t be enough doctors to treat everyone.[2]
The cost of health care will go up and the patient-physician relationship will disappear. This sacred and effective relationship will disappear because more and more patients will be forced to get treatment at a hospital compared to fewer private practices. Dr. Naffah points out that more and more hospitals will acquire private practices because private practices are folding at an alarming rate. The cost of health care increases because hospitals are paid at higher rates from Medicare and insurers compared to a private practice.[2]
Physicians will be forced to be part of accountable care organizations (ACOs). ACOs are comprised of a group of government bureaucrats in charge of delivering care to a selected population of patients. The organization, following pre-set, government-mandated criteria, is supposed to increase quality by working with physicians to cut waste. Dr. Naffah says ACOs will dismantle the relationship between the patient and their physician. These organizations have self-interest in reducing costs because they get a cut of the total waste they aim to save.[2]
Physicians will be forced to ration care in the name of cost cutting measures. The pressure to save on health care costs may override a physician’s primary duty to uphold the Hippocratic Oath to practice medicine honestly and ethically. However, Dr. Naffath believes Obamacare leaves physicians no other option than to unwillingly break it.[2]
Perhaps the most comprehensive points Dr. Naffah brings up is summed up by him as, “We will thus have established a new standard, one that the government will hail as thoughtful and well proportioned, that hospital administrators will label as coordinated and aptly delivered, and that regulators and accreditation agencies will honor as compliant. Regardless, the rest of us will recognize the new standard for what it really is: medical mediocrity.”[2] Essentially the new health care law will change health care in America forever, and for the worse. Medical care will be eseentially reduced to another government service, like others, that are provided by unaccountable and often untouchable government bureaucrats.
Now that we have covered the real and lasting effects of Obamacare, we would like to ask you the same question again. If you are a physician, where do you stand on Obamacare and the deleterious effects upon the economy, but more importantly the patients of America? You only have a few days to change the course of America and its health care system.
