Traditional Web Pages vs. Facebook Business Pages

mobile friendlyThere is some debate about the relative merits of Facebook Business Pages verses traditional web pages. If you are not a web design professional, an expert in SEO techniques or an accomplished Facebook user, you may not even understand the difference.  Both these common digital marketing solutions have pros and cons. Here are a few examples:

  • Ownership and Control. In your traditional website, you have complete control over all content, branding strategy, SEO techniques and other aspects. You own your website. With Facebook, you’re dealing with a third-party site. You follow the company’s terms of service, which are frequently revised. In effect, Facebook, not you, owns the site.
  • Site Design. With a website, you design your webpages to match your own branding strategy and goals. You are free to make changes anytime at your discretion. On a Facebook page, you can add your own logo design and make minor changes in appearance, but you will still have Facebook’s look. On the other hand, you (or your internet marketing agency) must do the design and the maintenance work yourself for traditional websites.
  • Interaction. On a traditional website you have limited opportunities to interact with your audience, especially if it is a “template” or amateur site design. Facebook is a place where you often find participants and “friends” using social media to interact with others. The typical Facebook user is more likely to be engaged in a conversation or leave comments.
  • Timeline. Facebook’s Timeline is a way to easily send your contents to thousands of people spending time on Facebook. With one easy click, users can get all your updates, comment on your Facebook posts and share your information with their own network of friends and family. This feature is not available with a traditional website, unless your audience can subscribe to your RSS feed. The drawback is that your users always must be using an RSS reader to keep information streaming to them. Most people will not do this.

The bottom line is that both Facebook and traditional web pages are needed. There is no substitute for the way branding strategies can be accomplished via a business website. On the other hand, the convenience and efficiency of Facebook’s automatic update and delivery cannot be ignored.

That is why Axiom does both! We build and maintain traditional websites and Facebook pages for clients simultaneously. Take a look at these examples from a medical practice we serve:

If you are still trying to maintain your own web presence, we urge you to contact us to review your situation and see what we can do to help. In the meantime, here are some housekeeping suggestions for all webmasters.

Yearly Checklist

  • Backup! This is so basic that we hope it does not need to be mentioned. If you have signed on to a provider like GoDaddy or iPage, they will have a service that automatically backs up your site. However, you will probably be charged for this and you can do it perfectly well yourself. Use one of the tools like “BackupBuddy” (a free WordPress plugin) or a similar offering.

Make sure that at least one copy of the backup files is stored somewhere off your computer. For most people, their Google Drive will have plenty of space for this function. In any case, backup is an absolutely mandatory maintenance activity. If you are not doing it now, start immediately and store one copy in an offsite, safe place.

If you are using a tool like WordPress (about one third of all websites do), update the WordPress core program, your plugins, and themes. This will ensure that everything works together as planned.

  • Speed Check. One side effect of the digital revolution and high-speed internet connections is that attention spans have shortened dramatically. Several studies suggest the typical viewer will wait no more than a few seconds for a site to load. If it is not there, they move on to the next suggestion in their search results. If you have not done so recently, load your own site and see how long it takes.
  • Mobile Speed and Compatibility Check. In a big way, the computer age in marketing has ended. Today, most search queries are performed on smartphones and mobile devices, and the results are viewed on those small screens. Have you checked to see how your site looks on a smartphone? How fast does it load on mobile devices? The speed check suggested above is even more important for smart phones.
  • More than a few seconds of loading time is too long! If this is an issue, look for the common causes, like graphic elements that are too large. A rule of thumb is to make all images no larger than 12 kilobytes and total page no more than 100 kilobytes. Images take up most of the download time for a web page. There are many ways to optimize a web page, but the one that will improve your speed the most is to make graphics as small as possible.

Doing this may require you to learn to use a program like Photoshop Express, a free online image editor. This skill should not take long to master, and it will enable you to reduce an image’s pixel count to the minimum. Most people are surprised to see that when viewed on the internet, the low-density image looks as good as a much larger file.

  • Security Check. Perform security fixes as needed. Most people who are not full-time webmasters or at least dedicated amateurs, will not know how to do this. Their best alternative is a plugin like Wordfence Security or Sucuri Security.

This list is the minimum you should be doing. To find out more, please contact us at Axiom Administrative Services or call 800-888-6348.

The Importance of Good Web Design

mobile friendlyThere are literally billions of websites on the internet today, and yours is just one of them. If you are operating a small business, professional practice or non-profit organization, your website is just one small fish in that internet sea. That ocean is a crowded, competitive place, and to get the attention you deserve, you must have a web presence that stands out.

Your website has a visual impact that is just as important as your storefront, your signage or even your personal appearance. In fact, your website is very likely to be the first impression that a customer, patron or patient gets. It may very well be the deciding factor in a buying decision. Given those facts, why do so many business and professional people choose a mediocre or amateur web design?

Part of this problem may be laid at the feet of people who run internet marketing agencies and construct SEO strategies. They may sometimes pay more attention to little known Search Engine Optimization techniques like page and image titles than to the appearance and the usefulness of your page. There may be many opinions, preferences or tastes when it comes to any design, but there are some guidelines to which all (good) design must subscribe.

Here is a basic list of those principals:

  • Good design must be pleasing to the eye (“aesthetically pleasing,” as experts say). Good appearance is integral to the usefulness of most products, and your website is a product. It is an object that viewers use to discover what they want to know about you, your businesses and your services. In many cases, websites have completely replaced older tools for this purpose. How long has it been since you consulted a physical copy of the Yellow Pages to find any product or service? Printed flyers and brochures are still used, but they are a niche medium, usually distributed in parking lots or found in mail boxes.
  • Good design must be useful. Why do searchers go to a website? There are many frivolous reasons, but if you are a business, service or professional person, people go to your site to fill some need. They want to buy wallpaper, find a CPA or satisfy some other desire. Do not load your website (especially the home or landing page) with too many words, buttons or sidebars.
Ask yourself and some other people what information is most likely to be useful to a viewer, and keep the NAP principal (Name, Address, Phone number) in mind. This information should be on any good business or professional website.  Be certain that the most commonly sought information is easy to find. Images are extremely important to getting and holding attention, but pick only a few for the landing page.
  • Good design keeps your landing page messages “short and sweet.” Of course, you want to stimulate the customers’ basic emotions and thoughts, but people are gravitating more and more to small bits of content like, “how much does it cost” or “what are your services?” Be certain that it is easy to find an answer to a question like that on the home page. If longer, more in-depth content is necessary, there should be an optional link to learn more.
  • Good design absolutely has a strong logo on your landing page. This is the visual reminder of all you do and stand for, a single image that summarizes your branding strategy.
  • Good design means that it is mobile friendly. Mobile optimization should be part of all good web design. More than half of all web traffic is now generated by mobile devices, so you must ask, “How will this design look on a tablet, Android or iPhone?” Make certain that your web designer or internet marketing agency knows that mobile optimization is a must-have.

Overall, your website should be well constructed, not a cheap web design, it should be updated frequently with useful content and it should reflect a well thought out branding strategy and SEO strategy. This is what the professionals at an internet marketing agency like Axiom do best. If you are struggling to find digital marketing solutions that work and branding strategies that make your business stand out, turn to Axiom. Your business deserves more than a cheap web design, and Axiom is more than an internet marketing agency. Axiom Administrative Services has the professional skill and small business SEO skills needed to get your web presence the ranking it deserves.

Our business marketing team can combine traditional marketing tools like direct mail advertising with local SEO services to build your branding strategy. Please visit Axiom’s small business services page or call Axiom at 800-888-6348.

Putting Sound to Work

mobile phone with headphones
Axiom’s blog articles have often ‘spoken’ of the increasing importance of graphics, audio and audio-visual material on the web. Various fortune-tellers of the web’s future have told us that by this or that year, the web will be nearly all graphics, animation, live-action webcasts or video presentations. The internet of the future will be watched or listened to far more than it is read like a book or newspaper.

Right now, this is beyond the technical or time resources available to most amateur webmasters. If they are running a small business, professional practice or non-profit, they will have little time to devote to producing video material. However, there are ways to put sound to work on your website without a lot of technical skill. You have almost certainly seen someone listening to an audio presentation on their smart phone or mobile device. Producing an audio version of a blog article is within the technical ability of most people.

If you are not familiar with Audacity, the free audio recording and editing software, you can download it from audacityteam.org. Many people feel that Audacity is the best piece of free software available anywhere. There are numerous free lessons available on YouTube and the Audacity site to teach the basics of making your own audio material.

Once produced, this material can be placed on the web in a number of ways, each contributing to your overall branding strategy and digital marketing solution. The directions for doing this are available at various social media platform sites, including Facebook and YouTube. If you are using the most common web content management system (that is WordPress, by far), you can find extensive instructions for uploading and embedding audio into your website at WordPress Audio Instructions. The WordPress content system will produce a neat looking player app that can be embedded in your website.

If you are not up for recording your own material with Audacity, there are a number of free or reasonably priced applications for converting text to mp3 or other audio format files that can be uploaded to your site. Check out the free on-line service, fromtexttospeech.com or the downloadable software, “Dragon NaturallySpeaking,” both of which convert text to mp3 files. The free or inexpensive programs use the standard Microsoft voices of “Microsoft Mike” or “Microsoft Vera.” Other software provides a range of natural sounding voices, but the quality of free programs has improved dramatically and the extra expense may not be worthwhile.

There are some cautions to using this technology. Axiom does not think that it is a good idea to have an audio presentation load and play automatically when you download a webpage. The unexpected sound can be annoying to the user and those around him or her. Also, audio is not a substitute for quality content. Quality content is still the heart and soul of a good webpage (see Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines, Axiom 9/10/18).

Audio can easily become a key part of your branding strategy, helping your website to achieve the digital marketing solution you need. Unlike professional video, most people can master this technology in a few hours and post their first audio in a day or two. Nevertheless, any effort like this requires time and effort. If you do not have the time or inclination to devote to this, Axiom can provide digital marketing solutions that work and branding strategies that make your business stand out. Your business deserves more than a cheap web design, and Axiom is more than an internet marketing agency. Axiom Administrative Services has the professional skill and small business SEO skills needed to get your web presence the ranking it deserves.

What’s in A Name? (A Domain Name, That Is)

Branding Word ConceptThe short answer is “There is a lot in a name! In fact, domain name is critical.” That’s right; your website domain name is a critical launching pad for your branding strategy, your digital marketing solutions, your SEO strategy and your overall digital marketing plan. A well-chosen domain name will make people think of your small business, professional practice or non-profit organization. Unfortunately, many domain names are chosen without thinking through the consequences on SEO techniques, the effects on local SEO services or even the business goals.

Before choosing a domain name, it is a good idea to ask yourself some basic questions:

  • What are my business goals?
  • What are the goals for this website
  • What do you want viewers to do during or after viewing the website?

If you are not familiar with domain name system terminology, there are some basic definitions that you need to know:

  • A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is at the highest level of the system. It is the abbreviation that follows the “dot.” In the Unites States, the best known TLDs are “.com,” “.net” and “.org.”
  • A Main Domain (sometimes called the “root domain”) is the name that precedes the TLD. For example, in the name “Google.com,” Google is the main domain and dot com is the TLD. Sorry if you were thinking of using that one, it is taken. Axiom’s domain name is com.

In general, if your website is for a business or professional practice, you should try to get a dot com or dot net TLD. If you are a non-profit or service organization, the dot org extension may be preferred. Those name extensions are well recognized by the public and lend themselves to a branding strategy, to local SEO services and to sound digital marketing solutions.

Let’s take one of Axiom’s clients as an example. When a name like “our seniors dot net” is spoken and heard, the listener understands that the term means a web address and will almost certainly be able to find it on the web. Just entering the term ourseniors.net will get the user to a page that refers to the OurSeniors.net organization. Which location depends on which search engine you are using (probably Google or Bing).

The name, “OurSeniors.net” illustrates an important point – more and more business and service organizations are intimately tied to the internet. The dot com or dot net extension is an important part of their branding strategy, indicating that their services are at least in part web-based. If you are using the Google search engine, typing “ourseniors.net” will get you to a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) that is filled with references to our client. You will find the OurSeniors.net Home Page, links to their Better Business Bureau Profile, to their publication, OurSeniors.net Magazine and information in the Your-Business-on-Google side box (address, phone, business hours and  webpage).

You can see how the domain name is part of the branding strategy and how local SEO services and SEO techniques can be applied to this domain name. It all fits together nicely.  Now, what about choosing the Main Domain name?

For many small business operators, the purpose of the website is quite simple: to make potential customers aware of your business or practice, its location, services and products offered, etc. As closely as possible, you should try for a main domain name that reflects this purpose. Here are some key pointers-

  • Keep it easy to spell and type correctly. Search engines are getting better and better at guessing what misspelled words are meant to be, but it is still best to get them right.
  • Do keyword research. Try to imagine that you are looking for the product or service that your business sells or provides. What words would be in your search? Putting the most important keyword or phrase into the domain name is the ideal. The services of an internet marketing agency like Axiom Administrative Services can be a great help in finding the right keyword(s).
  • Keep it short is a good rule of thumb, but do not make this a dogma. Balance the descriptiveness of the name against its length. A name like “volusiapainting.com” may be a better SEO strategy than one like “vp.com.” Both domain names could be for a house painter in Volusia County, but the longer name is far more descriptive, lending itself to the SEO techniques of location and identity.
  • If your website is for a local service or business, try to include location in your domain name. “volusiapainting.com” tells the searcher that your business serves the Volusia County area.
  • Be cautious of names with numbers. Hearing the name, “one two three dot com” may lead the listener to type, “123.com” or “onetwothree.com.” If you are thinking of a famous number like 1600Pennsylvania (the White House), this may pass muster, but be careful.
  • Protect your domain name. If you are able to find a domain name that really fits your purposes, protect it by purchasing the same main domain with other TLDs. If you are going to use “volusiapainting.com,” consider buying the dot net extension as well, even if you do not use it. This protects you from competitors who may imitate your site.

Choosing and registering a good domain name is just the start of building a great branding strategy and a successful small business SEO plan.

What Is a Content Management System?

WordPressIf you have ever investigated the possibility of having an website for personal or business reasons, you are likely to have run across the term “Content Management System” or “CMS.” Put simply, a content management system is a software program that manages (and presumably makes it simple) to create, edit, organize and publish data, graphic and text material. For our purposes, we are speaking only of Web Content Management Systems or WCMS programs. Although they are used mostly for internet or “web” publishing, WCMSs can also be used to manage content on a closed “intranet” or a single computer.

By far the most popular web CMS is WordPress; data recorded late in 2017 reported that almost 30% of all the 1.8 billion websites in the world were powered by WordPress. The invention of WordPress had a great democratizing effect on the internet. This CMS made it possible for people with a minimum of technical knowledge to publish their own website. It is not only amateurs who have turned to WordPress and other CMS providers. Almost any internet marketing agency will have an in-house WordPress expert, as will any small business SEO consultant or organizations specializing in branding strategies and digital marketing solutions.

Famous companies like Forbes, the New York Times and National Geographic rely on WordPress, as well as celebrities like the Rolling Stones and Beyonce. They all have websites built with WordPress. Why has this happened? The fact is that relatively few people will take the time, or expend the effort, to learn HTML, Java programing or the details of CSS. Even professional SEO services and experts in small business SEO are not likely to have the time for this task. By using a CMS these creative, non-technical people can construct a very professional website.

WordPress has numerous competitors, some heavily advertised. You have probably seen or heard an ad from Wix, Squarespace or Weebly. Despite their efforts, WordPress continues to dominate the CMS market. It has an abundance of teaching material, “plugins” that perform specialized tasks and even offers a free version.

All of this is quite interesting and it provides millions of amateurs with a hobby and a way to publish their own blog or a website devoted to their cats or grandchildren. For the small business person, professional, non-profit or service provider, WordPress can be a great help, but it is unlikely to be the full solution. It is doubtful that they can learn to construct, maintain and update their own website.

The professionals at Axiom Administrative Services are experts in managing WordPress sites, as well as small business SEO, digital marketing solutions and branding strategies. Axiom understands the needs of small businesses, professional practices and nonprofits. If you are struggling to find digital marketing solutions that work and branding strategies that make your business stand out, turn to Axiom. The CRITICAL Importance of Visual Content

Branding Word ConceptThere is one trend in the internet world that overwhelms all the others. That trend is visual content. The creative people who devise branding strategies, professional SEO services and even logo design services are all keenly aware of the growing dominance of visual content in both social media and the wider internet. The Pew Research Center reported recently that, in 2017, more adults used YouTube.com (an entirely visual site) than visited Facebook.

All effective digital marketing solutions must now take this into account. Advertising pros have long known that, compared to written or sound-only material, visual presentations are more engaging, remembered longer and more likely to produce action. Visuals significantly increase the engagement of an audience because they quickly capture attention; visuals can tap into the conscious and unconscious emotions of an audience much faster than printed or spoken words.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that people remember much more of what they see than what they merely read or hear. One market study found that Facebook posts with images drive 2.3 times more engagement than those without images. If you want to engage people on social media, or on the wider internet, you must show them visuals that can tell a story and build your branding strategy.

Good digital marketing solutions will grab the attention of an audience and effectively engage them in that branding strategy. When you start the process of building a website or developing a branding strategy, start working on your visuals before the launch. Creating a photo or video of someone using your product or service makes it easier for people to imagine themselves doing so. The term, “engaging visuals,” can include still images, screenshots, graphs, videos, memes and GIFs or even a copyrighted logo from a professional logo design service.

All of this is sound advice, but there is a problem; if you are a small business operator, service provider or professional practitioner, how are you going to find the right visuals to convey your message. If fact, have you thought carefully about what your message (your branding strategy) should be or what digital marketing solutions you will employ? The internet is full of visual images for sale or, in some cases, free.

If you have any doubt, do a search for an obscure term like, “Birthday Cat Memes, Images and Gifs.” You will almost certainly find a bunch of visual images suited to a birthday card for cats. If you do not know, a meme (in terms of digital marketing solutions or a branding strategy) is an image or video that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users.

But how do you go about resizing these images to fit your website or Facebook business page, what about copyright, what is the best image title for SEO link building or page ranking purposes? Most professionals, business owners or service providers do not know! But they should know that these tools and skills are absolutely essential to their success. If you are struggling to develop branding strategies and digital marketing solutions that work, it would pay you to turn to a professional internet marketing agency and search engine optimization company. Axiom Administrative Services has the professional skills needed to guide your web presence to the rankings it should have.

Axiom knows how to create, optimize and place visual content. Axiom can produce and embed video demonstrations or educational material in your website or social media platforms. 5 Do’s and Do Not’s for Webpages

responsive web designIf you are struggling with SEO techniques, trying to develop digital marketing solutions and branding strategies that work, it would pay you to turn to a professional search engine optimization company like Axiom Administrative Services. As a professional search engine optimization company, Axiom can provide your website with the small business SEO services and digital marketing solutions you need.

Most professionals, small business people and non-profit organizations already know that the day when cheap web design would suffice has passed. Still, some business and professional people try to do this on their own or have a staff member take care of it. If you or your organization are in that category, let the pros at Axiom give you a few hints. These “Do’s” and “Do Not’s “ are the top 5 things that any web designer, amateur or professional should know.

  1. Do have unique and original content. Do Not scrape, copy or cut and paste material from other sites.
Plagiarized material is a killer for webpage ranking. Every webpage should have a satisfying amount of main content or “MC” that is original. Cheap web design cannot meet this requirement. If you are unable to create your own content, consider a professional internet marketing agency, to create both main content and a SEO strategy.
  2. Do have a mobile responsive website. Do Not use cheap web design.
Website responsiveness has become essential. The best branding strategies or SEO techniques will be to no avail if the site cannot be viewed on mobile devices. The number of web queries issued on smart phones or similar devices has long since passed the number coming from computers. Cheap web designs are frequently not optimized for mobile viewing.
  3. Do have a fast-loading website. Do Not tolerate load-time over 5 seconds.
Professional SEO services will always achieve loading times of 5 seconds or less. If you are doing the site design yourself, be sure to minimize the HTML code-to-text ratio, to avoid lengthy tag names and limit webpage white space.
  4. Do have proper page title tags. Do Not have missing, duplicate or too-lengthy title tags.
Title tags tell a search engine what the page is about; they are essential to ranking the page. Webpages with missing or duplicated tags are almost certain to drop in ranking.
  5. Do have internal and external links. Do Not have broken, repetitive or missing links.
Broken or missing links are a turn off for both the viewer and search engines. SEO link building increases the likelihood that your page will be seen and ranked. This is critical to all search engine optimization services, and to successful digital marketing solutions.

Designing webpages, planning branding strategies and developing SEO techniques has become a science and a profession in itself. If you are busy with your own professional practice or small business, the best way to design your digital marketing solutions is a qualified professional SEO service.  Axiom is more than an internet marketing agency. Axiom Administrative Services has the professional and small business SEO skills needed to get your web presence the ranking it deserves.

What is ‘Net Neutrality?’

Net NeutralityRecently, you may have heard or read about an issue called “Net Neutrality.” This is one of those political or policy issues that can directly affect web designers, as well as the small business and professional people who use the internet for business purposes. That means just about all of them.

Net Neutrality is (or was) a set of regulations enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that required internet service providers (ISPs) to give equal treatment to all traffic going to or from any user. Internet service providers were not permitted to give or sell faster transmission service to websites or content producers that could afford to pay higher rates. This had been the policy under both the Bush and the Obama administrations; it meant that Joe’s Hardware Store was guaranteed internet access equal to that enjoyed by Lowes Home Improvement or Home Depot.

In December, the FCC approved a plan to end the Net Neutrality protections. Theoretically, this means that ISPs like Verizon or AT&T could give preferential treatment to big dollar customers. It is important to understand that no such thing has happened as yet and ISPs claim that they have no plans to do so. Free market economists claim that we will all be better off if ISPs are free to give whatever treatment they want to users. If the end user does not like it, they are free to go to another provider.

They point out that, more and more, the internet is a highway for services like Netflix, Amazon Prime or traditional broadcast networks like CBS to stream entertainment. This live or on-demand streaming is estimated to consume 80% or more of the internet’s data capacity in just a few years. ISPs claim that the added income from premium users will help them build the added capacity they are going to need. Public interest groups, consumer rights organizations and some internet giants like Google are opposed to doing away with Net Neutrality.

There are some arguments on both sides. Right now there is a movement in Congress to reverse the FCC ruling by law, making Net Neutrality a legal requirement, not simply a regulatory rule as it was before December. For internet marketers, there is nothing to be done now except to make your feelings known to your representatives in Congress. This possibility also means that the services of an internet marketing agency like Axiom are more important than ever. Whether Net Neutrality is restored by law or not, the day when cheap web design could do the job has passed.

If your professional practice or small business is struggling to find digital marketing solutions or branding strategies that work, it is time to call Axiom. Your business or non-profit requires more than a cheap web design and an amateur branding strategy. More than an internet marketing agency, Axiom Administrative Services has the professional skill and SEO techniques needed to get your web presence the ranking it deserves. Axiom can combine traditional marketing tools like direct mail advertising with local SEO services to build your branding strategy.
